GYPSD 2019 Kick Off

Debra McKinnon

Grande Yellowhead Public School Division
You may know Debra McKinnon as a budding naturalist who works with kindergarten students outside. She has spent the majority of her teaching career working in the early childhood field of education; guiding students to learn through play with an emphasis on problem-solving. Even though Debra sees the importance of learning outdoors, there are organic strategies that can be used in the classroom that also benefit students, particularly in reading and writing.

Debra holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta with a focus in elementary music, and a Master of Science in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics for pre-kindergarten to Grade 6 from Walden University. At the school level, Debra has worked with students to improve their reading and writing abilities using the Levelled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program. Debra uses her Forest and Nature School training and applies it to reading and writing both inside and outside of the classroom.
